One Wrong Address Can Cost You The Local Pack
What NAP means and why it decides rankings
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Google collects these from your website, your Google profile, directories, review sites, social profiles and dozens of other places. Then it compares them.
When every source agrees, Google is confident about who and where you are, and confidence turns into ranking. When sources disagree, Google trusts none of them fully and puts a business with one consistent answer above you.
The common ways it breaks
- A move. The website gets updated, the meta tags and directory listings do not.
- A rebrand. The new name goes live, the old one lingers in fifteen directories.
- Suite numbers. Unit 4 in one place, Suite 4 in another, nothing in a third.
- Phone numbers. A tracking number on the website, the real one on Google.
- Two listings for one business, both live, splitting everything between them.
How to audit your own
- Write down the exact name, address and phone you want everywhere. This is your master version.
- Search your business name in Google and open every result on the first three pages.
- Check each against the master version, including punctuation and suite formatting.
- Check your own website source. Right click, View page source, and search for your address. The meta description is where old addresses hide.
- List every mismatch with a link, then fix them one at a time.
Where to look first in Canada
Google Business Profile, Yelp Canada, Yellow Pages, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, your industry association directory, and any local chamber of commerce listing. Those cover most of the weight.
How long the fix takes to show
Directories update at different speeds, from days to several weeks. Expect six to eight weeks before the picture is fully consistent. It is dull work with a genuinely large payoff, which is why so few businesses do it.
The duplicate listing problem
If you find two Google listings for the same business, do not delete one. Request a merge through Google so the reviews consolidate rather than disappear. Deleting the wrong one loses every review attached to it.
